Sand or dust: which is safe for my critter?

Sand. Fine dust hangs in the air and can irritate small lungs, which is why hamster and gerbil keepers have moved away from dusty products. A proper sand bath lets your critter roll, dig, and scrub the oils out of their coat without breathing in a cloud.

Why does my critter need a sand bath?

It's grooming, not play, though it looks like both. Rolling in sand strips excess oil and moisture from their coat, the same way they'd maintain themselves in the wild. Many critters also treat the sand pit as a favorite digging spot, which is a bonus enrichment win.

How much sand do I need?

Enough for a 1 to 2 inch layer in their dish, topped off as needed. Enthusiastic bathers kick a little out while they clean and play. One 8oz bag covers any Syrian or dwarf hamster with extra left over for top-offs.

How often should I change it, and can I reuse it?

Sift out droppings and debris every few days and the same sand keeps working. Do a full swap when it starts holding odor or moisture.

Why buy this sand when a big bag costs less?
